Black America Web

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Beyoncé is one of the world’s most scrutinized pop stars, and now that study is moving to academia.

The Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University is offering a course called “Politicizing Beyoncé.”

Kevin Allred, a doctoral student who is teaching the class, tells the university’s online news site that he is using Beyoncé’s career as a way to explore American race, gender and sexual politics.

The class supplements an analysis of Beyoncé’s videos and lyrics with readings from Black feminists. Allred says he’s seeking to help students think more critically about media consumption.

Rutgers also has a class examining the theology of Bruce Springsteen‘s lyrics.

Georgetown University has a class called “The Sociology of Hip-Hop: The Urban Theodicy of Jay-Z,” focusing on Beyoncé’s rapper husband.

Keep off the Negativity!

So my Sunday hasn’t been the best so far, and my feelings got hurt somewhere along the way. My first reaction was to stay angry, just be mad! cos i didn’t do nothing wrong yet i was taking the blame. I had reasons to be angry.

I looked up and saw the Nelson Mandela book on my shelf and slowly, i realized its not worth it. (If you don’t know who Nelson Mandela is, i’m sorry, you are missing out on alotta knowledge).

Ode to Olivia

There are some things in life that words just can’t do justice.  I have many reactions when I see beautiful successful strong black women on TV. And as for Olivia Pope, I just have one reaction:

You go girl!! Lady got class, beauty, and she knows when to be tough.

Being Mary Jane….

I’m sure by now most of us have seen the new show on BET called Being Mary Jane; starring Gabrielle Union.  For most of us this show fills the void of Scandal during its off season.  To me this show is just as scandalous with a nice amount of eye candy in the two leading men.  The main focus of the show is Mary Jane who is 38 successful, single, and has no children.  Ahh the life of the single successfuls, definitely a tale told many times and it usually has the same twist.  At some point or another they end up with a married man either voluntarily or unbeknownst to them.  It happens.  As you get older and the men in your age group get older, there are a lot less “single” men to choose from. I mean real single, not single with a “friend”, or live in girlfriend…
